From June 12 to 27, 1998, the water system of Poyang Lake
was affected by the heavy rain. The water level of Fuhe,
Xinjiang and Changjiang exceeded the highest level in history.
There were also floods in the waters of Dongting Lake,
Yuanjiang and Xiangjiang.
Water in the two lakes flooded into the Yangtze River,
causing a rapid rise in the water level in the middle and lower
reaches of the Yangtze River, which has exceeded the warning
level since June 24 one after another.
From June 28 to July 20, the main rain zone moved to the upstream
of Yangtze River. The first flood peak occurred in Yichang
on July 2, with 54,500 steres per second. The water level
in Jianli, Wuxue, Jiujiang and other water stations
exceeded the highest water level on July 4.
The second flood peak occurred in Yichang on July 18,
with a flow rate of 55900 steres per second. During this period,
the water level of the middle and lower reaches of the
Yangtze River has been falling because of the lack of water
in the water system of Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake.
From July 21 to 23, Wuhan, Hubei province and its surrounding
areas suffered from long-continued heavy rain; On July 24,
a flood occurred in the Yuanjiang and li water of Dongting
water system and the flood peak flow of li water in Shimen
hydrological station was 19900 steres per second,
which was the second greatest flood in the 20th century.
At the same time, there were also great floods in the Xinjiang River
and Lean River in Poyang Lake. On July 24, the third flood peak
occurred in Yichang, with a flow rate of 51,700 steres per second.

Yangtze River rised rapidly. After July 26, the water level of
Shishou, Jianli, Lianhua pond, Luoshan, Chenglingji,
and Hukou and other hydromestic station has exceeded
the highest water level again.
In August, the water level in middle and lower reaches of
the Yangtze River systems stayed at a high level and the upstream
of Yangtze River occurred flood peak 5 times.
In these flood peaks, 3 flood peaks continuly appeared
from August 7 to 17 (10 days), causing the middle water level to rise.
On August 7, the fourth flood peak occurred in Yichang,
with a flow rate of 63,200 steres per second. The water level
reached up to 44.95 meters at 4:00 p.m. on August 8,
exceeding the water level of flood in 1954 0.28 meters.
The sixth flood peak occurred in Yichang on August 16
with a flow of 63,300 steres per second, which was the largest peak
since 1998. This time, the flood in the middle and
lower reaches of Hongfeng encountered the flood of Qingjiang,
