Current status of biological invasion in China

2019-11-13  |   Editor : houxue2018

China has a vast territory, a wide variety of habitats, and diverse ecosystems. Most exotic species are easy to find suitable breeding and breeding grounds in China, which makes China more vulnerable to invasion by alien species.

Due to the lack of sufficient understanding and systematic investigation of alien species invasion for a long time, China still cannot provide more authoritative catalogues reflecting the invasion of foreign species. The State Environmental Protection Administration has announced the first batch of 16 “invasive alien species”.

According to preliminary statistics, at present, invasive alien species known in China include at least 300 invasive plants, 40 invasive animals and 11 invasive microorganisms. Among them, 8 kinds of invasive plants such as water hyacinth, water peanut, Eupatorium adenophorum, rice grass and Mikania micrantha have caused serious damage to agriculture and forestry, and there are 14 kinds of pests with the most serious damage, including American white moth and pine wood nematode. Potato beetles and so on.

These alien invasive organisms have now become the number one enemy of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry production and biodiversity conservation in China.

On the one hand, it has caused huge economic losses to China's agriculture, forestry and animal husbandry. It is estimated that the direct economic losses caused by only a few major alien invasive species to China each year amount to 50 billion yuan. On the other hand, it makes our task of maintaining biodiversity more difficult. According to the survey, about half of the 100 most destructive alien invasive species announced by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature have invaded our country. Consistent with this, 156 of the 640 world endangered species listed in the International Convention on Endangered Wildlife are in our country. Therefore, it is imperative to maintain biodiversity and fully resist the invasion of alien species.
