On January 23, 1556, an earthquake of 8 magnitude struck Hua County, Shanxi
province, killing 830,000 people. This is the deadliest earthquake in our
history. According to , there were no small and
medium-sized earthquakes before the earthquake. But to the right, there was
sense of land rotation and dizzy feeling in the epicenter area; after the
earthquake, victims have considered using wooden boards as walls to resist
On December 26th, 1920, an earthquake of magnitude 8.5
struck Haiyuan, Ningxia province. The earthquake killed
240,000 people and destroyed 4 cities as well as several counties.
On May 23, 1927, an earthquake of magnitude 8 hit Gulang,
Gansu province, in which around 40000 people died. When the
earthquake occurred, the land crazed and green blackwater
spewed out and the sulfur gases killed unaccountable famine refugees.
On December 25th, 1932, an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred
in Changmabao, Gansu province and killed 70000 people.
When the earthquake hit, there was yellow wind and white light
moving back and forth on the wall of yellow earth; the mountain
rock burst out of dust, and the city of Jiayuguan, a famous historic
site in China, was collapsed; the snow peak collapsed in Shule river,
Henan province; The thousand Buddha caves are rolling and

On August 25th, 1933, an earthquake of magnitude 5 hit Diexi town,
Mao County, Sichuan province. When the earthquake occurred,
the ground vomited yellow fog, city was destroyed and a shepherd

caused the Minjiang to break down and become a lake.
On August 15th, 1950, a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.6 occurred
in Chayu, Tibet. Hundreds of thousands of square kilometers in the

River was cut into four sections in the landslide and the whole village
was thrown across the river. More than 2,000 homes and temples were
destroyed and at least 1500 people died.
On March 8th, 1966, an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 hit Longyao, Xingtai,
Hebei province. On March 22, 1966, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2
struck Ningjing County, Xingtai, Hebei province, killing over 8000
people, inguring 38000 people and caused economic loss of 1 billion yuan.
On January 5th, 1970, an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 hit Tonghai,
Yunnan province, killing more than 15000 people and inguring over
32000 people. After the foundation of our country in 1949, this is
the second disaster that caused death of more than 10000 people
since 1954, when the Yangtze River overflowed.
On February 4, 1975, an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 hit Haicheng,
Liaoning. The huge and disastous loss was avoided since the
earthquake was successfully forecasted and prevented and it was
therefore called the miracle in the history of world science
and technology in the 20th century.
On July 28th, 1976, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit Tangshan,
Hebei province, killing more than 240,000 peole and injuring
seriously 160,000 people and a heavy industrial city was destroyed,
with direct economic losses of more than 10 billion and it was
the deadliest earthquake in the world in the 20th century.
On November 6th, 1988, two strong earthquakes of magnitude 7.6 and
magnitude 7.2 hit Lancang and Genma, Yunnan province. The two places
were 120 kilometers apart but the occurrence time was just 13 minutes
apart. Two counties were destroyed, injuring over 4000 people, killing
more than 700 people and causing economic loss of 2.5 billion.
On May 12, 2008, an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 hit Wenchuan, Sichuan
province and the directly and severely affected area was up to 100,000
square kilometers. Earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan caused 69227 people
to die, 374643 people to injure and 17923 people to miss. More than 15
million people have been relocated and over 40 million people have been
On April 20th, 2013, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 hit Lushan, Yaan,
Sichuan province, with a depth of 3km, cuasing heavy casualties and property
loss. More than 190 peole died, over 10000 people injured and more than
380,000 people were affected.
