A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Morocco on the night of the 8th local time. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), it was the strongest earthquake to hit the region in more than 100 years. As previously reported, the USGS said that since 1900, within 500 kilometers away from the region, there has never been an earthquake of magnitude 6 and above, and earthquakes of magnitude 5 and above have occurred only nine times. In 2004, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the northern Moroccan Mediterranean port city of Al Hossema, causing a total of 628 deaths, and 926 people were injured. In 1960, the southern Moroccan Atlantic city of Agadir was struck by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that killed 12,000 people. The complexity of Morocco's terrain is an important cause of disasters, and this data sheet documents the disasters that have occurred in the Moroccan region since 1900.
