Hunhe River, before Han and Tang dynasties, was called Liaoshui, Xiaoliaoshui, and has been called Hunhe River ever since Liao Dynasty, because the current is swift, the water color is turbid. It is one of the main rivers of Liaoning Province, is also the essence of Liaoning Province. Some famous cities such as Shenyang, Fushun located in its basin. The source of Hunhe River is known as Nalu River, or the Red River. The segment near Shenyang is also known as Shen Water, the lower reaches of it with the Puhe River's junction is also known as the clam River.

The Hunhe River originates from the west side of the Changbai Mountain branch of Wandian Town, Qingyuan County, Fushun City. The source area is high and forest dense, and the water is clear at the bottom. The Hun River flows through the Qingyuan, Xinbin, Fushun, Shenyang, Liaozhong, Liaoyang, Haicheng, Taian and other cities and countries. The sink of Sancha River and Taizi River flows into the Daliao River. The total length of the basin is 415 kilometers, the basin area is 11,500 square kilometers, the hilly area accounts for 65 percent of the total watershed area, and the plain area accounts for 35 percent.

The main tributaries of it on the right bank are the Yinger River, the Zhangdang River, the Wanquan River, the Xi River and the Pu River. There are Suzi River, Salhu River, She River, Dongzhou River, Guchengzi River, Lagu River, Baitabao River and so on on the left bank, most of the tributaries are concentrated in the upper and middle reaches of Shenyang. Among them, there are 31 tributaries with an area of more than 100 square kilometers, while the tributaries of Dongzhou River, Guchengzi River, Zhangdang River and Puhe River are relatively large.
