Map description

Map source

The online map of the distribution of earthquake disasters in Songyuan, Jilin in 2013 in China is sourced from the China Natural Disaster Atlas in 2013 and was published by China Map Publishing House in February 2015. The authors are the Office of the National Disaster Reduction Commission, the Disaster Relief Department of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and the National Disaster Reduction Center of the Ministry of Civil Affairs. The scale of the local map is 1:6000000.

Overall situation of the disaster

At 11:03 and 11:10 on October 31st, earthquakes of magnitude 5.5 and 5.0 occurred successively in Qiangorros Mongolian Autonomous County, Songyuan City, Jilin Province, with focal depths of 8 dry meters and 6 kilometers, respectively. At 16:18 on November 22, 6:4 and 6:32 on November 23, earthquakes of magnitude 5.3, 5.8, and 5.0 occurred near the epicenter, with focal depths of 8 kilometers, 9 dry meters, and 8 dry meters, respectively. Continuous moderate to strong earthquake disasters have caused 259000 people to be affected in 7 counties (cities, districts) of Changchun, Baicheng, and Songyuan, with 68000 people urgently relocated and resettled; More than 1000 houses collapsed, 58000 were severely damaged, and 147000 were generally damaged; The direct economic loss is 2.02 billion yuan.

This earthquake disaster has the following characteristics:

1.The special season of earthquake occurrence makes disaster relief work difficult

Jilin entered winter early, and when the earthquake occurred, the temperature in the disaster area had already dropped to below zero. Due to climate conditions, recovery and reconstruction could no longer be carried out in the winter of 2013, making it extremely difficult to ensure the livelihood and resettlement of the affected people.

2.Frequent aftershocks and significant superimposed effects of disasters

Although the magnitude of the aftershocks is relatively small, most of the severely damaged houses after the main earthquake have turned into collapsed houses after multiple aftershocks. Generally, damaged houses have become severely damaged houses, and disaster losses continue to increase.

3.The structure of residential buildings is special, and there are many severely damaged houses

The majority of Mongolian people in earthquake affected areas have a habit of opening a large window on the gable of their houses, which greatly reduces the seismic performance of the houses. At the same time, due to local economic conditions, the construction quality of the houses is poor, and there are no seismic related structures and measures, resulting in a large number of severely damaged houses.

Note:

Information on Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau is currently lacking.

The position of the red dots in the figure indicates the epicenter position.
