Introduction of Landsat on AWS

Lansat on AWS allows anyone to use Landsat data through Amazon s3. All eight Landsat scenarios in 2015 and cloud-free scenarios in 2013 and 2014 are available. All new Landsat 8 scenarios are usually available daily for several hours after production. This site allows you to view all Landsat images available on AWS. Landsat is a joint effort of the U.S. Geological Survey and NASA. It is the longest project to collect images of the Earth from space.

All data can be obtained from Landsat PDS Amazon S3 bucket in the AWS region of the western United States (Oregon). The data is optimized to access the program from Amazon ec2. AWS provides free data sets on Earth observation and environment. Data can be analyzed without downloading or storing your own copy. The site uses AWS lambda and Amazon API gateways to create web pages on demand without maintaining any servers.

Catalog structure is used to organize data according to the path and line of each scenario. For example, the files of the Landsat Scene LC80030172015001LGN00 are located in the following locations:

"L8" catalogue refers to Landsat 8, "003" refers to the path of the scene, "017" refers to the row of the scene, and the final catalogue matches the identifier of the scene. The identifier is in lxsppprrryyydddgsivv format and is divided into the following sections:

L = Landsat

X= sensor

S= satellite

PPP = WRS path

RRR=WRS row

Yyyy=

DDD = Julian's Day of the Year

GSI = Ground Station Identifier

VV = Archived Version Number

In this case, the scene corresponds to WRS path 003, WRS line 017, filmed on January 1, 2015.

The catalogue for each scenario includes:

A. TIF GeoTIFF is used for each band of the scene (geotiff includes 512 *512 internal tiles, up to 12 bands), an. tif.ovr overview file for each. TIF (useful in gdal-based applications), a mtl.txt metadata file, a small RGB preview JPEG (3% of the original size), and a larger RGB preview JPEG. (15% of the original size), you can view the index. HTML file previewed by RGB in the browser, as well as links to GeoTIFF and metadata files.

Landsat has been operating since 1972 and is currently the longest project to collect such images. Landsat 8 is the latest Landsat satellite, which collects data based on visible, infrared, near infrared and thermal infrared. Because of its global vision and long history, Landsat has become a reference point for all earth observation work and is considered as the gold standard for satellite images of natural resources. It is the basis for research and application in many global sectors, including agriculture, cartography, geology, forestry, regional planning, monitoring and education.
