The flood of Songhua Jiang in August, 1956

In the first ten-day period of August 1956, there were heavy rainfalls in Second Songhua River, Lalinhe river and Mudan river. The main streams and tributaries encountered and the peak flow rate in Harbin reached 11700m3/s, which was the third major flood since the measured data in 1898.

In 1956 Songhua River floods, the city of Harbin took the measures on flood control. The South Bank of the embankment didn't crevasse. Many dikes burst because of the large amount of floods. According to statistics, the upper reaches of Zhaodong Laoshan in Harbin embankment burst and 18 thousand and 500 hm2 farmland were encountered by flood.At the same time, there were 115 villages, 4500 households, 22 thousand and 500 people were affected. The embankment that was in Jijiadian, Songpu district, Jiangbei bank, Harbin burst. Seven thousand hm2 of farmland were encountered by flood. Eight villages, 5820 households, 25 thousand and 200 people suffered the disaster.

On the main stream of the Songhua River in the lower reaches of Harbin , Yangjia Tomb embankment of Hulan Area burst. 2 thousand and 100 hm2
sections of land were flooded. Meanwhile, in the lower reaches of the main stream of the Songhua River, Fujin County Daniuquan's embankment burst and 3 thousand hm2 farmland was inundated. In addition, the Hulan River downstream on the left bank of Hulan County were cracked. 6 thousand and 200 hm2 of farmland were flooded. 83 villages, 3884 households, 17 thousand and 883 people were affected. Xiangyang mountain of Wuchang County burst which caused 1 thousand and 600 hm2 farmland was flooded, 27 villages were flooded, 100 households were affected. In Shuangcheng County, the right bank of the Lilin River, there were 13 levees overflowing and 2 thousand and 500 hm2 of land were flooded. In 1956 Heilongjiang Province in Songhua River basin, the 1300 villages, 8 households and more than 380 thousand people were affected. 700 thousand hm2
of farmland were flooded. The output reduction was 700 million kg. 150.83km of the embankments and 47km of the roads were destroyed by floods. The flood destroyed 2 small reservoirs, 151 culverts and 381 other hydraulic projects. The railway interrupted traffic 24 hours, resulting in a direct economic loss of 160 million RMB, an indirect loss of 140 million RMB, and a total loss of 300 million RMB.

The flood in Second Songhua River basin was also heavy in 1956. The affected area reached 717 thousand hm2, accounting for 15% of the total sowing area in Jilin province. 1 million 69 thousand people were affected, 87 of them were killed. A total of 1077 water conservancy projects and bridges were destroyed by the flood. 23km of the dykes were destroyed and the loss of grain reached to 785 million kg.

According to the preliminary statistics, the suffered farmland in the whole basin reached 1 million 667 thousand hm2 in 1956. The affected population reached 1 million 449 thousand and the grain yield was reduced 1 billion 485 million kg.
