Emergency measures for people suffering from fire and burns

Emergency measures should be taken when a person is found with fire or burns:

(1) Take effective measures to extinguish the flames on body so that the injured can be quickly separated from the spot;

(2) Prevent shock and infection. In order to prevent shock and wound infection, the injured should be given oral painkillers (brain or severe respiratory burns, no morphine) and sulfonamides, or intramuscular antibiotics, and oral burn beverages, or drink light salt tea, light salt water;

When clothes catch fire, employ all kinds of methods to extinguish fire as soon as possible, such as water immersion, water spray, lying on the spot and rolling, etc. Never run upright or stand to shout so as not to encourage combustion and worsen heavy respiratory burns. After extinguishing the fire, the injured should immediately take off clothes. If clothes and skin stick together, you can cut off the unglued parts, and bandage the wound.

When giving water to the injured, it is advisable to drink a small amount of water for several times. If there is vomiting or abdminal distention, then stop drinking. Furthermore, patients should be prohibited from drinking plain water or sugar water to avoid brain edema and other complications.

(3) Protect the wound surface. In the fire, burn wound can not be done special treatment generally. In order to prevent the wound from pollution and aggravating infection and deepening wound, the wound should immediately be treated with triangle towel, big gauze piece, clean clothes and sheet to give simple and effective bandage.

Do not break blisters as far as possible. Don’t paint gentian violet and other colored external drugs so as not to affect the judgment of burned surface depth. When the hands and feet are burned, the fingers and toes should be separately wrapped to prevent adhesion.

(4) Combined wound treatment. Fracture should be fixed. Stop bleeding in an emergency; those with head, chest and abdomen injuries must be treated appropriately and sent to the hospital for treatment in time.

(5) Rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment after simple first aid. Watch out for shock before and during escort. Move gently and smoothly to minimize the pain of the wounded.
