Affected by cyclone environment and terrain, there are laws for wind direction and wind speed. Under the longest influence of winter monsoon and usually in the back of cyclone, the wind in northwest of this area often blows northwesterly and northerly, the direction will changed into southwest or south if it comes from north of Liaodong Bay to Songhuajiang drainage area(Anhua, Suihua), and to Xiaoxinganling Mountains, such as Yichun. As for Changbai Mountains, south of Xiaoxinganling Mountains and east part, they almost blow westerly.

Annual average wind speed serve as 2 to 4 meters per second. The line formed by Liaohe Plain and Sanjiang Plain acts the main airflow passage because of hypsography. Hence, there is a higher wind speed in plain areas and river valleys, reached 3 to 4.5 meters per second in Songliao Plain and Sanjiang Plain, a lower speed in mountains, only 2 to 3 meters per second in Qianshan Mountain, Changbai Mountain, Zhangguangcai Ridge, Daxinganling and Xiaoxinganling Mountains, and even below 2 meters per second in some area. Spring often has the highest wind speed in a year, and the high speed tends to accelerate evaporating in plain area, which always leads to spring drought.

Gale weather affected by cyclonic circulation and hypsography, always takes place during March to May in spring when people start spring seedling and germination. What’s more, high wind accelerates evaporation, being the main course of the spring drought. Distribution of areas that have the highest wind is similar with the distribution of the overall annual average wind speed. On account of channeling flow, the wind in Dongbei Plain, starts from Panjing, Shenyang, Siping, over Changchun, Hailun, to Songhuajiang River valley belt which includes Haerbing, Tonghe, Jiamusi, runs 25 to 30 meters per second as the highest speed annually, and this area also has the most fresh gale days. While in Qianshan Mountain, Changbai Mountain, Daxinganling Mountain and Xiaoxibganling Mountain, the highest wind speed stands at 16 to 20 meters per second. In retrospect of what we mentioned about the peak, Heaven Pool in Baitou Mountain, wind in which is quite strong because of its special landform, the highest speed even more than 40 meters per second, merges with 270 days exceeding force 8 wind, ranking first in Northeast in China. In addition, Liaodong Peninsula and littoral of Liaodong Bay in the south with an influence from ocean, Huma, Nenjiang, Qiqihaer and Baicheng in the west with effects of downhill terrain, chiefly run 20 to 30 meters per second.
