Hongshan reservoir is one of the key projects in the West Liao River, located in the main stream of Laoha River, which is in Wuduntaohai county, Wengniute Qi of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region , covering a basin area of 24486 square kilometers, accounting for Laoha river basin area of 74%。The water of the dry tributaries of the upper and middle reaches of the Laoha River is basically controlled.

Hongshan reservoir is a comprehensive utilization of large water conservancy projects ,including flood control,as well as irrigation, power generation and comprehensive utilization of seasonal fish.The hub includes the main dam, auxiliary dam, spillway, Hongdong drainage, water conveyance tunnel and hydropower station, with a total capacity of 1 billion and 619 million cubic meters.

The reservoir was built in 1958, and two main dams were joint by bridges in 1960. When a rare flood occurred in 1962, it played an important part in flood control.In 1963 the reservoir expanded, with the dam heightening, and built another flood tunnel. In 1965, with the completion of the main project, it began to work, and in 1966 it was delivered to the management unit. In 1975, the reinforcement of reservoir began, heightening the dam 0.5m, and completed from April to June of 1982.
