American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting 2018 held in Washington, DC, on December 10-14, 2018. Members of Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service System attended this conference and made the research progress presentation.

American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting 2018 held in Washington, DC, on December 10-14, 2018. Members of IKCEST Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service (DRRKS), Yang Fei, Han Xuehua and Wang Yujie attended this conference. The theme of this meeting covering topics ranging from the Earth’s core, to climate change and natural hazard preparedness, to the solar system, and addressed new transdisciplinary topics, societal issues, and more.

Wang Yujie made the oral presentation of Application of Disaster metadata standard in Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service System in the Risk Management of Natural Hazards in Urban Regions session. The topic content included the disaster metadata standard design and its implementation in DRRKS for data retrieving. The participants showed high interests about the content of this topic and accessed the DRRKS system (http://drr.ikcest.org/) on site.

Han Xuehua presented a poster on a new study in analysis of social media data for Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service. To investigate the usefulness of social media data in disaster-related information acquisition and revealing public opinions, this study analyzed 28,608 original flood-related Weibo texts in terms of their attributes pertinent to space, time, content, using the 2018 Shouguang flood in China as a case study. The study can help people better understand the trend and public sentiment of disaster events, so that decision-makers can act on disaster in a timely manner.

AGU Fall Meeting 2018, the 51st meeting, was the largest ever, with over 28,500 people converging on the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. There were 101 countries represented, with over 8000 oral presentations, 17,000 poster presentations, 1,900 sessions, 22 town halls, and 800 e-lightening presentations. At the same time, Fall Meeting 2018 also marked the kickoff of AGU’s Centennial, a celebration of AGU’s accomplishments over the last 100 years and our vision for the next 100 years. On this conference, DRRKS team publicized the Disaster Risk Reduction Knowledge Service System, which further enhanced IKCEST's international influence.
