Introduction to the national emblem : The national emblem of Belgium was established in 1830. As the Principality of Brabant once enthusiastically supported the people's struggle for independence, the national emblem and national flag of Belgium all retained the features of the Duchy's emblem in black, red and gold. The national emblem is in the form of a cloak. The central pattern of the national emblem is a male lion standing on the black coat of arms. The pair, known as the "Belgian lions" (Latin: Leo Belgicus), are the national symbol of Belgium. The cross scepter is the symbol of royal dignity and power. Around the coat of arms is the decorated band of the first King Leopold; on both sides there is a lion holding the national flag; in addition, in the national emblem, there is a red coat symbolizing the monarchy. At the top of the red coat, there is a crown. Under the wreath hung the order of Leopold (the first king of Belgium), with a gold scepter marking the royal power and justice, and a gorgeous crown on it. The nine flags at the top of the national emblem represent the nine provinces of Belgium. (but there are actually 10 provinces) the red ribbon at the base of the national emblem writes the national motto in French and Flemish: "unity is strength" (French: L'union fait la force, Dutch: Eendracht maakt macht). This version of the national emblem came into use on May 17, 1837.
