Introduction
The National Park Service was established by an act of Congress on August 25, 1916, under the Department of the Interior. It is mainly responsible for the protection of natural and historical heritage sites such as national parks, national historic sites and historic parks in the United States. The National Park Service protects the natural and cultural resources and values of the National park system from harm for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of present and future generations. The National Park Service works with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural conservation and outdoor recreation across the country and around the world.
