Abnormal earthshine refers to the colorful light from the ground before the earthquake. It shows mixed colors rarely seen in daily life, such as silver blue, white and purple, but mainly of them are red and white. It also has different shapes like ribbon, globe, column, diffusing shape and so on.

Generally, earthshine occurs in a wide range, usually within a few hours to a few minutes before the earthquake, lasting several seconds.

Precursors of Tangshan Earthquake

On the evening of July 28, 1976, in the northeast of Tangshan, colorful beams of light rose like powerful signal lights, shining the earth as bright as day.

After the flame scattered and disappeared, the ground began to tremble. After a few seconds, Tangshan became ruins. Actually, this was a strong seismic precursor, known as the earthshine.

Records of Seismic Luminescence

Many strong earthquakes are accompanied by luminescence. This peculiar and terrifying natural phenomenon was noticed thousands of years ago. China is the first country in the world to record the earthshine.

In foreign countries, earthshine has also attracted wide attention. This record was first published in the Chronicles by the Roman historian Tacilan, which described the strong earthquake in Asia Minor in 17 AD. The book says that before the earthquake the sky was seen sparkling.
