The flood of second Songhua River in August, 1953

August 18, 1953 to 20, a heavy rain rainstorm occurred in 3 places. They were Longgang mountain that was of the stretching branch of Changbai Mountains, hada ridge of Jilin and the west side of the great black mountain. The rain belt is located in hilly area which is between the mountains of Changbai Mountain and the Songliao Plain and the distribution is roughly east-west. The range of the rainstorm was rare in the northeastward. The hard rain caused great flood in the main stream of Songhua River, the upstream of Di'er Songhua Jiang and the Liaohe River.

According to incomplete statistics, 27 counties and cities in the two provinces of Liaoning and Jilin had suffered different degrees of disaster. There were many severely affected counties and cities in Jilin, such as Yonggi City, Panshi City, YiTong, Shuangyang, Lishu, Liaoyuan City, Dongfeng County and so on. The affected area was 349 thousand hm2, of which cut output more than 70% of the land accounted for 69 thousand hm2. 8475 houses were destroyed and the number of affected people reached 2 million 670 thousand, of which 27 people died. The Fengman reservoir played a great role in resisting the flood of the field. The largest inflow of Fengman reservoir was 19600 m3 /s. The maximum flood discharge was 7870 m3 /s and the peak cutting flow was 7200 m3 /s. Nevertheless, there are still heavy disasters happened along the two sides of the river which was downstream in Fengman. 404 dikes were crevassed and 75 thousand hm2 of land were flooded. 50 thousand hm2 of land could not be reproduced. The affected population reached 144 thousand and 1814 houses and 20 factories were destroyed.
