A general situation about the rainstorm in Liaohe River, 2nd Songhua River in August, 1953

Affected by the 10th typhoon during August 18th to 20th in 1953 , a rare rainstorm has occurred in the Liao River and the Second Songhua River watershed , the rain area rose from the bohai bay along Qing , Chai , Fan River in Liaoning province, where the river passed through the upper reaches of Dongliao River and Huifa River , the upper and middle reaches of Second Songhua River and the upper reaches of Mudan River in Jilin province, and extended to the watershed of Tumen River . The rainstorm strike was the northeast to southwest trend , the long axis of the heavy rain which daily maximum rainfall was above 50mm was about 80 kilometers , the short axis was about 170 kilometers , the rainfall center was Liangshuiquanzi at Qinghe River watershed in Liaoning province .

Rainfall Process

The extraordinary rainstorm at the middle and lower reaches to Liao River and middle-upper of Second Songhua River during 18th to 20th in August , the rainfall in the stable position was concentrated . The heaviest rainfall was mainly on the 19th , the rainfall center is Liangshuiquanzi village at the upper reaches of Qinghe River in Liaoning province , the rainfall was 273.7 mm on 19th , the maximum three-day rainfall was 353.5mm , sub-center was in Pinganchuan station at the upper reaches of Huifa River , the rainfall on 18th was 179.1mm , the maximum three-day rainfall was 328.6mm .

The range of the rainstorm was larger than the rainstorm at Liao river in 1951 , the rain area rose from the Bohai Bay along Qinghe River, Chaihe River , Fanhe River in Liaoning province , through upper reaches of Dongliao River , Huifa River , the upper and middle reaches of Second Songhua River and the upper reaches of Mudan River in Jilin province , and extended to the watershed of Tumen River . A day rainfall above 100 mm covered an area of 59.6 thousand square kilometers, three days of rainfall in over 100 millimeters covered an area of 100 thousand square kilometers , and the range of the extraordinary rainstorm was very large , the area of three-day's rainfall above 250 millimeters was ten thousand square kilometers , the area of three-day's rainfall above 340 millimeters was 3.4 thousand square kilometers , such a wide range of rainstorms is rare in the northeast.

The heavy rain caused the Liao River and Songhua River to be flooded simultaneously , The Liao River Tieling station occurred the second great flood since 1856 which surpassed only by the one in 1951, it was the first flood in Erlongshan reservoir at Dongliao River since 1856 , it was the first flood in Wudaogou station at Huifa River since 1888 ,it was equal to the first flood (1856) in Fengman reservoir at Second Songhua River , it was the fourth flood since the observations in 1898 in the Haerbin station at Songhua River main stream .
