Satellite remote sensing shows that China’s major sandy lands have improved ecologically in the past 10 years

In the Hunshandake sandy land in early autumn, trees of Pinus sylvestris, clusters of sand-blooming trees, and trees of yellow willow stand upright in the wind, woven together into green silk and satin, dressing up the sandy land that used to be raged by wind and sand.

This sandy land, which is about 200 kilometers away from Beijing and traverses the Xilin Gol League in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and the Horqin, Mu Us, and Hulun Buir sandy land constitute my country's four major sandy land, and their main bodies are all in Inner Mongolia. Some herders once said that sandstorms in the past could block the door of the house and only climb the windows when going out. Nowadays, there is less wind and sand, more plants, green all the way all the way. Satellite remote sensing images show that in the past 10 years, the four major sandy areas in my country have increased in green color, while yellow areas have decreased.

In the 1990s, the Hunshandake Sand Land expanded at a rate of 1.8 kilometers per year, just like a huge “sand basin” “hanging” above the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.Beginning in 2000, the local area relied on the Beijing-Tianjin sandstorm source control and conversion of farmland to forests and other ecological projects to restore the ecology by means of fence enclosures and artificial afforestation. The vegetation of forests and grasses increased, and the damage of sandstorms decreased.

The latest survey results of the Inner Mongolia Forestry Department show that the coverage of forest and grass on the four sandy lands has increased in recent years, the sandy lands have shrunk inward, and the ecological environment has been significantly improved.A lock-up shelter forest system with a length of 400 km and a width of 1 km to 10 km on the southern edge of the Hulunshan Dake Sandy Land has basically taken shape. The Hulunbuir Sandy Land has achieved major changes in the reduction of the desertification area and the degree of desertification. The ecological conditions of the Horqin and Maowusu Sandy Lands have continued. Reverse the situation for the better.

Protecting the existing forest and grass vegetation is the key to sand prevention and control, transforming the production and lifestyle of the residents in the sandy area, and developing the forest, sand and grass industries, which not only protects the ecology, but also swells the pockets.

To protect the ecological environment is to protect the productivity. The four sandy lands with fragile ecology are trying to take the road of green development to make the mountains greener, the water clearer and the people happier.
