A general situation about the rainstorm in Liaohe River in August, 1951

Affected by cyclone cold front from August 13rd to 15th in 1951 . At Qinghe River in Liaoning province, the upper reaches of eastern Liaohe River and the upper reaches of Huifa River in Jilin province. There was a heavy rain. The storm center was in Xifeng, Liaoning province, the survey's daily rainfall is 350 millimeters , the rainfall is 440 mm in three days, the torrential rain has caused flooding in all of the rivers in the region, it was the first flood in the Kaiyuan station at Qing River and the Tieling station at Liaohe River mainstream since 1856.It was the third flood in Erlongshan reservoir at Dongliao River since 1856,it was the third flood in the Hailong reservoir (Baokang village) at the upper reaches of Huifa River since 1888 .

Rainfall Process

The heavy rain mainly happens from August 13rd to 15th . The storm center is located in Xifeng station in the Qing River ,and the total rainfall is 440 mm; The maximum rainfall in one day is 350 mm . The average rainfall of Zheng jiatun, Sanjiakou and Tieling interval, which formed the main flow area of Liao river flood, has reached 259.2 mm . The rainfall is concentrated in two periods : the first period (from 1 to 13 o'clock in 14th ) has 186.7mm in twelve hours , the second period (from 22 o'clock in 15th to ten o'clock in 16th ) has 72.5mm in twelve hours . The rain has stopped for 33 hours between them .The high value area of this rainstorm is in the Qing River basin.The average daily rainfall is above 200 mm, and the three-day average rainfall is 332.6 mm , which is equivalent to the 48% of the average annual precipitation in the region.

A day rainfall above 100 mm covered an area of 26 thousand square kilometers, the three day rainfall exceeds 100 millimeters covered an area of 53.4 thousand square kilometers.

The torrential rain caused the flooding in the Liao River and the Qing River in one hundred years. The peak discharge of Tieling station at Liaohe River mainstream and Kaiyuan station at Qinghe River were 14200 cubic metre per second and 12300 cubic metre per second respectively , the peak discharge that flew into the Dongliao River Erlongshan reservoir was 3190 cubic metre per second , it's the third flooding since 1856; Baokang village at upper reaches of Huifa River also had the third flooding since 1988.
