Map description

Map source

The online map of China ’s ethnic distribution is derived from the atlas of China National Geographic Map, prepared by the Editorial Committee of China National Geographic Mapp, and published by China Encyclopedia Press in November 2011. The scale in the map is 1: 33000000.

Since ancient times, China has been a unified, multi-ethnic country. During the 5000 years of historical development, people of all ethnic groups across the country have jointly created China's long history and splendid culture. There are 56 ethnic groups in China, in addition to the Han nationality, there are 55 ethnic minorities.

According to the main data of the 1% national sample survey in 2005, of the total population of the country, the Han population is 118.295 million, accounting for 90.56% of the total population. The Han is also the most populous ethnic group in the world. The population of all ethnic minorities is 123.33 million, accounting for 9.44% of the total population. The Zhuang population is the largest, and the Luoba ethnic group is the least. The characteristics of the distribution of various ethnic groups in China are: large mixed settlements, small settlements, and staggered settlements. There are ethnic minorities living in Han areas, and Han people live in minority areas. This distribution pattern was formed by the interaction and flow among various ethnic groups during the long history of development.
