The direct economic losses caused by floods in the 1990s

In 1991, severe flooding occurred in the Huai River valley and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Disaster mainly located in part of Anhui, Jiangsu, Hubei, Henan, Hunan, Sichuan and Guizhou. Among these provinces, Anhui and Jiangsu lost most. About 4.99 million houses collapsed and 781 billion lost nationwide because of the flooding.

In 1998, there is an abnormal climate system in our country. There is much rainfall in the Yangtze River basin which led to a rare peak discharge, a long flood season for two months and regional floods by converging with the flood in the lower reaches in Yichang. And also, because of the climatic anomalies, Jiujiang levee breached, 1075 embankments collapsed in Yangtze River, Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake, 0.3213 hectares being covered, 2,290,000 people were affected; a total of 6.7 million hectares of arable land were planted, 1562 people dead and the direct loss up to 2000 billion.

According to statistics, in the 1990s, about direct economic losses of RMB 120 billion yuan was caused by floods and just in 1998, the loss reached up to more than 250 billion yuan. Loss caused by disasters accounts for between 1 percent and 4 percent of gross national product, which was 10 to 20 times of developed countries such as the United States and Japan.
