People named the typhoon began in the early 20th century. It is said that the first time of naming a typhoon is an Australian forecasters in the early 20th century, who name the tropical cyclone after statesman he doesn’t like so the weatherman can openly mocked them.

In the northwest of Pacific, people formally named typhoons after the names of persons from 1945. At the beginning, people only use names of the women and after that, it is said that it encounters opposition by feminists, so people use names of men and women interchangeably from 1979.

Until November 25, 1997 to December 1, the world meteorological organization held the 30th meeting in Hong Kong. The typhoon committee decided that the northwest of Pacific and tropical cyclone in South China Sea uses names with Asian style and decided to use the new naming method from January 1, 2000.

The new naming method is a named table made in advance, which is then reused year after year. There are 140 names on the list, respectively provided by the world meteorological organization Wind committee in the Asia-pacific region of Cambodia, China, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Japan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Micronesia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam and 14 member countries. Each country or region provided 10 names.

The 140 names were divided into 10 groups, with 14 names in each group and these names are arranged in alphabetical order of English used circulatly in order. At the same time, the number of the original tropical cyclone is retained.

Specifically, each name is no more than nine letters and it is easy to pronunce. There is no bad meaning in each member's language and they will not bring any difficulty to each member. They are not names of business association and the selection should be recognised by all the members. If any member is opposed to a name, the name cannot be used as a named of typhoon.
