The lens manufacturer equation is used to determine the relative index of a lens that will appear as a converging or diverging lens based on its curvature and lens material with the surrounding medium. This equation is the radius of curvature R1 and R2 used to determine the focal length (thickness = 0) of the thin lens.

The focal length of a lens in the air can be calculated by the lens manufacturer's equation. For thin lenses, the power is about the sum of the power of the surface.

There are basically four factors that determine the refractive index of the lens of the focal length of a lens, the refractive index of the environmental medium forming the lens, the radius of curvature of the front surface of the lens, and the radius of curvature of the back surface of the lens. A lens with an equation involving these numbers of focal lengths is called the lens manufacturer equation because its focal length is given in the number of lenses involved in manufacturing.
